He Can Be Taught!!!

Note - this post is going to have absolutely nothing to do with poker whatsoever.

As anyone who knows me or has read my prior posts knows, I'm not exactly gifted when it comes to advanced technology (and by "advanced technology", I mean anything that would have gotten you stoned to death in Salem 300 years ago for being a witch). I'm not totally incompetent, but I tend to lag about 3 to 4 years behind the latest and greatest equipment and need some time and a decent instruction manual to figure out how most things work. Given this rather crippling disability, I am proud to say that I've made two new discoveries.

The first is my cell phone. I had been having problems with my cell phone - calls not getting through, calls getting dropped mid-conversation, etc. - which really isn't a good thing what with my wife being more than eight months pregnant. Call it a hunch, but I don't think it would go over too if she went into labor and couldn't get in touch with me. Time for a new phone.

When it comes to cell phones, my requirements are pretty minimal. I don't need it to have a camera (I don't think I've ever taken a picture with a cell phone even though my last two both had cameras), I don't need it to play music (I have an iPod for that thank you very much), I don't need it to download video (I don't watch Desperate Housewives on TV and I sure as hell am not gonna watch it on my phone), and I don't really need it to have web access (though it is nice to be able to check college football scores no matter where you are). I don't even much care what it looks like to be honest. All I want is a reasonably-priced phone that fits comfortably in my pocket and gets good reception.

I went to the Sprint store and soon found almost exactly what I was looking for. Reasonably priced? Check. Small, lightweight and comfortable in my pocket? Check. Good reception? Check. While it does have a camera, I don't think anybody sells phones without them anymore so I didn't have much choice there.

Now here's where things got interesting for me. I am a big fan of hands-free headsets as they make it much easier to use the phone while driving and much more comfortable when walking (when it's 13 degrees outside, I'd rather keep my hands in my pockets). I asked the salesman about getting a headset for the phone and he asked if I wanted it to be wireless. Wireless headsets? It turns out that the phone I picked has Bluetooth and can use wireless accessories, which I thought was pretty fucking impressive. While the headset he tried to sell me in the store cost more than I was willing to spend, I found the newer version of teh same model on Amazon for less than half the price and ordered it that night. It finally arrived yesterday and, after reading through the manual written specifically for tech-retarded people like myself, I managed to get it set up last night and I think this just might be the coolest thing ever.

God I am just a dork. Did I really just write four paragraphs about buying a cell phone? I'm so ashamed.

My second "discovery" is that I finally figured out how to add a tracker so I can see if/when anybody actually finds this site. Imagine my surprise when I got checked the counter last night and discovered that I had nine visitors (seven if I subtract my home and office computers)!!! The only possible explanation I can come up with is that people must have found the site through factgirl's link (thanks again facty).

If people are actually going to visit, I have to start writing something worth reading (this post probably isn't the best place to start, but I promise it will get better). My next post will finish off the poker resume and we'll see where it goes from there.
